Putting the Sway in Swing

I like to feel a sway in my swing. I am not sure you could make a dime giving lessons if you even used the word sway in a lesson. However, my swing is built on natural feel and for me, it feels like a sway.

What does this sway look like or how might one describe it. In my motion , the , Figure "8" Motion, I feel a distinct swaying feel. It is present in the weight shift, transition and helps with the flow of the motion and helps swing the weight in tempo.

A forward press is the best way for me to start the swing, or sway, since I like to have a connected one piece takeaway. It seems to get everything balanced and moving on on the same page and direction in the back swing. It is kinda like taking a practice swing and coming right back and into another swing without stopping.Better flow.

Now the overall sway motion happens in the anterior portion of the coronal plane. It has the appearance of shifting weight over or outside the right foot. That is not the case here. The motion actually loads the right leg from the foot to the hip and for a brief second, the entire body is balanced over the ball of the right foot in complete balance of weight, club and swing as the body transitions and the lower body leads the motion and transfer of energy.
The lag and real power is created by the lower body leading the motion while the upper body is following. Centripetal force causing centrifugal force. Simple , Natural Energy.

So, in short, the hands start the sway, or motion, and just as the club head and butt must change lead, the lower body leads the motion and hands on the down swing.

As I mentioned in the beginning, sway is taboo in golf instruction, but like it or not, it is , IMO, everywhere in Natural Motion.

I would really like to hear any thoughts or comments. All Are welcome.

Natural Swing Motion, A Lesson I 've Learned

Maybe we are complicating the simple movements the body makes naturally. If we were to swing within our natural motion, we would have all the info needed to build a natural and repeatable golf swing.
It is my opinion that the conventional golf is far from natural looking. It is made up of motions one believes they should execute, based on how someone else swings. Therefore, to view and observe a golf swing, especially someone else’s, is to view imperfection, because that motion only applies to them, and their natural swing motion. We should, IMO, observe our own natural swing motion in order to see the proper positions, as we execute them, in a natural state. Grab a racquetball racket and just swing naturally and I guarantee you, every position you hit will be the exact position the top golfers hit. But the difference is, you won’t need to remember the motion, it will be natural for you, and furthermore, you will do it in balance.

As far as natural positions go, try this. Stand tall, feet naturally placed and arms to the side. Now move just your hips left, does your head stay vertical?, no it naturally tilts. We make too much of what the body does naturally, put a name on it, stamp it and call it the move. My point is, we can't think balance, we can only feel balance. Our body will do things naturally. And as far as left eye, right eye dominant or lefty or righty, throw all that out the door. When you walk, the left leg moves forward at the same time as the right arm moves forward and vice versa the next step. Now ask yourself, Do I walk left handed or right handed, am I left foot dominate or right foot dominate? Are my ears level? Can I walk faster if I tilt my head? When you grip a club, do you grip it with the fingers or is it a palm grip? Don’t we grip it with both? If a player points both feet diagonally at his target line, is that a diagonal stance? Don’t both feet end up pointed that way at impact anyway?
Now don't get me wrong, it is the understanding of why these things happen in a natural motion that we are able to take advantage of it, such as pre setting in our setup, or observing limitations in a natural and dynamic state of execution. IMO, we should first learn to swing an object in balance, without the pressure of hitting a precise target, at first. Then observe and view that motion as our own and know that the motion is pure. We can then begin to allow that motion to adjust to the target by putting in the reps and simple trial and error.
The swinging motion should have little thought of balance, and more focus on intent. That is how we arrive full circle to the understanding of natural motion and in hopes of repeating it. We use pre-set positions that are natural occurrences, as stated above, to help automate the motion. We can trust these positions, because they are natural. Now once the swing begins, only feel and intent will produce results.
I believe the hardest part of golf is to define or explain the swing motion. Unfortunately it is, in reality , the most simple. PROPER impact position, swing (naturally) , then back to impact position. Now remember, address position is not impact position. The body will naturally take care of positions and balance through reps.
I have been down the analyzing road before and came to one conclusion, I spent more time trying to explain what I did naturally, rather than spending time actually executing and perfecting my natural motion. Unfortunately, I cannot say I wasn’t warned. But that is just me and this entire blog is merely me sharing a valuable and necessary lesson I learned in my journey. I will say this though, I loved every minute of it, and other than my beliefs and family, I felt alive.

Thanks for your time.
Good Luck and Keep Diggin!

I would like to update ,or add to the discussion some current info. and what I believe to be the motion in which we can observe all things necessary to produce speed and power in any motion while improving balance, rhythm and ultimately timing. In my profile blog, I have offered the figure "8" Motion, along with some basic information, as a possible platelet, from which we groove our motion and can find answers as to proper kinetic linking Now the thing about the figure "8" motion is, it can be execute in a forward or reverse order. By that I mean, in order to start the motion, we can go towards the target line(outside),, or away from the target line(inside), and continue the motion until you choose to release or transfer energy. Another thing I would like to point out is that, there is no one shape to the motion. While a standard figure "8" appears to be two symmetrical circles, the figure "8" motion never touches and is not confined to 2 D motion or flat planes of movement. For example ,if for a moment ,you can envision a rubber band, shaped in a circle, in front of you.Now grab the left side and the right side and twist one side forward and the other side backwards, and now imagine all the possible combinations , as far as paths, that can be created. The side can be stretched, compressed, etc.To me, this is what I envision as continuous motion and the possible paths it travels in order to create speed. Sometimes, I see the swing motion as a traceable path similar to the track on a roller coaster. From this sort of thinking, I can begin to execute the motion with proximal motions that control distal motions, because they both travel on the same track, yet the proximal one is easy to control and repeat. This is just what I am working on, as I continue on my journey. I would really like to hear if anyone out there has any similar thoughts.

In continuation of my thoughts on the "Original and Optimal Swing Motion", I tried to observe   the number of"Figure 8"s the body executes in a swing motion.
For starters, the wrists,  and hands, which I see as the nucleus of the swing motion,  and the most important. It obviously controls the butt of the shaft, which in turn controls weight or load,of which  both execute a figure 8.
Secondly, and equally as important , is the hips. Because of the connection of the upper torso and lower body, it is the core of the power source. The hips must translate ,coordinate,  and support the actions and intent of the swing motion. Their distinctive figure 8 is both cause and effect for this motion.
The knees, shoulders, elbows and even the nose and ears, make the figure 8 motion.
It is the constant changing of positions or direction that creates power in the motion. From up to down , from left to right, the power flows and increases as it speeds up.

For instance, the left and right side flow through this motion and change positions, as do the   hips, shoulders, left eye, right eye. They generate e speed and power much the same way a skate boarder does in a bowl, a kid on a rip stick or skate board. These are all motions that are naturally ingrained in our DNA to generate power or energy.
IMO, we must first learn to swing by observing this simple motion that we all execute naturally. There is no one way or wrong way, for that matter, to execute this motion. While every swing will be different , the results will be the same every time. Power will be generated and repeatable.
The components of this swing are, pull, push, lift , drop, and with change of direction causing  acceleration   and ultimately a release, all executed naturally with tempo.
This is what the swing feels like to me and how I interpret motion. I will never forget this motion.  It can be trusted because it never lies and will hold up under pressure.
If you execute this motion, I believe your swing will find you, it will answer all your questions, if you  just trust it.

It is with great respect, for those that came before, as well as the greats of today, that I make the statement, “I believe all swings, in golf or any swing motion, for that matter, produce power and speed in the same way.
I believe the Figure “8” motion provides one with the natural motion and inherent ability to create both speed and power. Whether you are discussing centripetal, centrifugal, leverage, rotation or any other aspect of creating power or inertia, we will find it in the natural Figure “8” Motion.
How would one define a Figure “8”motion. ?
I would like to offer a simple recipe to create or execute this motion and subsequently produce power and speed.
1)      A lift
2)      A drop
3)      A push
4)      A pull
5)      And the dynamic constant of changing direction
How you execute this motion, what you feel while doing it, how your explain it or teach it, is as different from everyone else as your fingerprints.
This motion is, IMO, is executed naturally by everyone, everyday. Once you feel it, you won’t need to explain it, or understand why it work, and you will certainly never forget, it, even if you tried.
Now please don’t misunderstand me. This motion is an, what I feel and see with regards to how I believe we all produce speed and power. The actual release of energy and ability to hit the ball is a different recipe comprised of timing, and reps.
My theories are based on my experiences, and focus solely on my ability to produce repeatable, controlled power and speed, in balance.
The following video demonstrates the basic look of the Figure “8”motion, and how I personally use it to swing a golf club and naturally produce power and speed,

In part II , will try to explain how one might begin to understand and execute this motion, and explore all the answers the Figure “8”motion reveals.
