Maybe we are complicating the simple movements the body makes naturally. If we were to swing within our natural motion, we would have all the info needed to build a natural and repeatable golf swing.
It is my opinion that the conventional golf is far from natural looking. It is made up of motions one believes they should execute, based on how someone else swings. Therefore, to view and observe a golf swing, especially someone else’s, is to view imperfection, because that motion only applies to them, and their natural swing motion. We should, IMO, observe our own natural swing motion in order to see the proper positions, as we execute them, in a natural state. Grab a racquetball racket and just swing naturally and I guarantee you, every position you hit will be the exact position the top golfers hit. But the difference is, you won’t need to remember the motion, it will be natural for you, and furthermore, you will do it in balance.
As far as natural positions go, try this. Stand tall, feet naturally placed and arms to the side. Now move just your hips left, does your head stay vertical?, no it naturally tilts. We make too much of what the body does naturally, put a name on it, stamp it and call it the move. My point is, we can't think balance, we can only feel balance. Our body will do things naturally. And as far as left eye, right eye dominant or lefty or righty, throw all that out the door. When you walk, the left leg moves forward at the same time as the right arm moves forward and vice versa the next step. Now ask yourself, Do I walk left handed or right handed, am I left foot dominate or right foot dominate? Are my ears level? Can I walk faster if I tilt my head? When you grip a club, do you grip it with the fingers or is it a palm grip? Don’t we grip it with both? If a player points both feet diagonally at his target line, is that a diagonal stance? Don’t both feet end up pointed that way at impact anyway?
Now don't get me wrong, it is the understanding of why these things happen in a natural motion that we are able to take advantage of it, such as pre setting in our setup, or observing limitations in a natural and dynamic state of execution. IMO, we should first learn to swing an object in balance, without the pressure of hitting a precise target, at first. Then observe and view that motion as our own and know that the motion is pure. We can then begin to allow that motion to adjust to the target by putting in the reps and simple trial and error.
The swinging motion should have little thought of balance, and more focus on intent. That is how we arrive full circle to the understanding of natural motion and in hopes of repeating it. We use pre-set positions that are natural occurrences, as stated above, to help automate the motion. We can trust these positions, because they are natural. Now once the swing begins, only feel and intent will produce results.
I believe the hardest part of golf is to define or explain the swing motion. Unfortunately it is, in reality , the most simple. PROPER impact position, swing (naturally) , then back to impact position. Now remember, address position is not impact position. The body will naturally take care of positions and balance through reps.
I have been down the analyzing road before and came to one conclusion, I spent more time trying to explain what I did naturally, rather than spending time actually executing and perfecting my natural motion. Unfortunately, I cannot say I wasn’t warned. But that is just me and this entire blog is merely me sharing a valuable and necessary lesson I learned in my journey. I will say this though, I loved every minute of it, and other than my beliefs and family, I felt alive.
Thanks for your time.
